Background

The corridor surrounding the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail (PHNST) is filled with history, culture, and outdoor adventure. Along its course from the Chesapeake Bay to the Ohio River and its component Mt Vernon, C&O Canal Towpath, and Great Allegheny Passage Trails, the PHNST embraces the shores of the tidal Potomac River, the escarpment within the Nation’s capital, and the Allegheny Highlands. As it bridges the Eastern Continental Divide, the PHNST serves as a “spine” for a Potomac-Allegheny Heritage Corridor, to provide a framework for connecting sites, stories and people. Among these, the story of Braddock’s Road provides a window to explore a turning point in the evolution of the United States as it crosses the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary War Trail, the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, the Journey through Hallowed Ground, and the September 11th National Memorial Trail.
